Alice “Marie” Johnson- The Book Lady Funeral services for Marie, 85 of Roswell will be held at 4 pm, Tuesday, June 22, 2010 at Anderson-Bethany Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. H. Ray Johnson officiating. Marie passed away June 18, 2010. Marie was born on August 31, 1924 to Sam H. Ward and Goldie M. Ford Ward in Whitewright, Texas. Marie and her husband owned and operated several businesses, including restaurants and a bakery. As a Restaurateur she fed many famous people, including Presidents Eisenhower and Nixon, as well as Gene Autry who requested her recipe for “the best chili he had ever eaten”. Marie’s passion for food overflowed into her personal life where her greatest love was cooking and baking for her family. She was a member of the Texas Business Women’s Association, hosted a national art show, and most recently was the proprietress of Happy Jack’s Bookstore, which she ran for 26 years. Aside from her love of cooking and books, she also enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren, yard work, and tending to her roses and vegetable garden. We remember her love for the Lord and her love for her family as she pointed us toward His cross. She is survived by one sister; Lillie Jo Deason of Canyon City, Co, one brother; Jack O. Ward of Denison, Tx, one son; H. Ray Johnson and his wife Laverne of Southern, CA, one daughter; Barbara “Lace” Harrelson and her husband Jack of Roswell, four granddaughters; Kay Massicci, Stephanie Jones, Jacqueline Oldfield and Jamila Garner, one grandson; David Johnson, a special niece; Anjanette Deason, five great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. Marie was preceded in death by her husband; Houston R. Johnson, her parents; Sam and Goldie Ward and one brother, Calvin Ward. Who can find a virtuous woman? Her price is far above rubies…She rises also while it is yet night and giveth meat to her household…Her children rise up and call her blessed.
