Clarence Charles Harshey

Lifelong Hagerman resident, Clarence Harshey, passed away peacefully August 26, 2019, at the age of 89. Clarence was born at St. Mary’s Hospital in Roswell February 6, 1930, to Mr. L.E. Harshey Sr. and Ede McKinstry Harshey. Clarence was a Pecos Valley farmer, owned longtime Hagerman business C&M Feed & Seed, as well as Harshey Trucking, up until the early 2010s. Through his family and community, he was actively involved with the Chaves County 4H & FFA, the Hagerman Little League, a supporter of the Hagerman school system, and throughout the years taught many community youths the value of a strong work ethic. Clarence and his wife were part of the first organizers to start the Chaves County Fair around 1970. They also were consistent supporters of the Youth Livestock Sales, buying many fair animals throughout the years. Family was always at the forefront of Clarence’s priorities as he was an avid supporter of all his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren’s sports and activities. He instilled the value of hard work and education to all of his kids and grandkids. Clarence was so proud of all of his college graduates and bragged about all their accomplishments to anyone who would listen! His love of fishing and hunting led him to Chama, NM, where it quickly became a family tradition to spend time there throughout the seasons. It is still celebrated today with annual family reunions spent in Chama. All of Clarence’s family learned to fish on the Chama River, snowmobiled in the San Juan Mtns and chased the Cumbres & Toltec Train thanks to his love of the area. He and his wife loved to travel around the United States, especially to see all their children and grandchildren. Clarence shared this love of travel with them and took all of them on many adventures, including to Indy Car races. He was an enthusiastic Indy race fan, and when the Indy 500 was on, you could guarantee Clarence was watching, if not there in person. Clarence is survived by his wife of 70 years, Judy Lang Harshey of Hagerman, NM; children: Terry Moss and husband Joe Dick of Janesville, WI, Mike and wife Lois of Dumas, TX; Tammy Taylor and husband Scott of Canyon, TX; thirteen grandchildren, 26.5 great-grandchildren, and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. In addition to Clarence’s parents and siblings, he was preceded in death by his grandson, Chris Harshey. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, August 31, 2019 at 10:00 AM, at the Hagerman Presbyterian Church. Clarence’s services are being handled by Anderson Bethany Funeral Home & Crematory.
