Elvira “Vera” Jimenez Elvira Jimenez, 58, passed away peacefully while surrounded by her loving family on Thursday, July 9, 2009 at UMC Hospital in Lubbock. Many have come to know her as a soldier following her very courageous battle with cancer, but to others, she was a beloved wife, mother, daughter, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend that will be greatly missed. Vera’s greatest pleasure in life was spending time with her family. She loved fishing with her husband, reading books, and spoiling her grandkids. She was the heart and soul of her family and the person everyone came to for guidance, comfort, support, and above all, love. On October 13, 1950, Vera was born to Abselin and Maria Lucero in Dexter, N.M. She spent the majority of her youth in the Pecos Valley. During her senior year at Goddard High School, she met Frank, who would become the love of her life. They were married on June 9, 1969, shortly before Frank’s deployment to serve his country in the United States Navy. They spent the next 40 years together. During this time, they had 4 children and, in 1981, chose to call Dexter their home. All of their children attended Dexter Schools. During this time, Vera started volunteering and eventually became an employee of the school district where she proudly worked for 20 years as a special education instructional assistant. Many people came to know Vera’s smiling face as she greeted them as the gatekeeper for many athletic events for Dexter Schools. She was preceded in death by her brother Abselin Lucero Jr. Vera is survived by her parents Abselin and Maria Lucero of Roswell. Her loving husband, Frank A. Jimenez Jr. of Dexter. Her daughters, Nancy Colby and husband Chris of Dexter, Monica Weusi and husband Akram of Blanco, TX, Rebecca Ginanni and husband Clifford of Lubbock, TX. Her son Frank A. Jimenez III of Dexter. Her grandchildren David, Briana, Jonathon, Emily, Erin and Haley. Her sisters, Lupe Mendoza of Roswell and Cecilia Gomez and husband Tommy of Dexter. She is also survived by many loved nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, July 14, 2009 at 2:00 pm at Anderson-Bethany Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to Elvira Jimenez at any Wells Fargo Bank to assist in offsetting the cost of incurred medical expenses.
