Obituary for J. Gary Cathey, D.D.S. Memorial services for J. Gary Cathey will be held Tuesday, September 11, 2012 at Christ's Church in Roswell at 10:00 a.m. Pastor Gerry Chavez will officiate. Burial will immediately follow at South Park Cemetery with Military honors. Gary was born on February 13, 1942 to Jack and Charlene Cathey in LaMesa, Texas. He grew up in Roswell and graduated from New Mexico Military Institute in 1962. Gary married the love of his life, Jan Adams, on December 19, 1965. He then continued his education at the University of Missouri at Kansas City School of Dentistry and graduated in 1968. He served his country as a Captain in the United States Army Reserves for six years. After three years in Truth or Consequences, NM, Gary and Jan moved his dental practice to Roswell. In 1974, Gary's brother, Dr. Phil Cathey, joined the practice, and they enjoyed a 38-year partnership together. Gary was blessed with a wonderful support staff. Marcia and Tina have been with him for over 30 years, and together with Angela, Marta, Roberta, and Cindy, they had become like family to him. This team, including both doctors, was bound together with professionalism but always found a way to create an office environment of fun and laughter. He was past president of the Eastern New Mexico Dental Society and was a member of the Roswell Rotary Club. Gary also enjoyed motorcycle touring with the Alien City Riders. Gary was a true patriot, loved his country, held strong conservative Christian values, and had a heart for Israel. He was an active and charter member of Christ's Church in Roswell and was always ready to share his faith and love for Jesus. Gary is survived by Jan Cathey, his wife of 46 years; his son Stephen Cathey and his wife Lorie; and his daughter Stacey Lynn Cathey, all of Roswell. He is also survived by his brother Dr. Phil Cathey and his wife Janet of Roswell; his sister Judy Moloney and her husband George of Lake Forrest, IL; his sister-in-law Judi Lambert of Arvada, CO; and Debbie Henry of Arvada, CO who was like a sister to him. Gary is survived by a granddaughter Shelby Rae Cathey of Roswell; three grandsons, M.J. Lewis of Dallas, TX, Chris Lewis, and Sean Lewis, both of Roswell. Two cousins who grew up with Gary and were very special to him are Charles Cathey of Huntington Beach, CA and Joe Cathey of Granbury, TX. An adored aunt of Longmont, CO, Jonita Green, also survives him. Gary was blessed with many nephews and nieces, aunts and uncles, all of whom he loved and adored. Preceding Gary in death were his father, Jack G. Cathey, and his mother, Charlene Williams Cathey. Honorary Pallbearers are Darrel Bethany, Sonny Espinoza, Rick Dolk, Dick Blair, Rick Hale, Stan Harbour, Doug Yett, Bob Thomas, Dr. Bill Greenhaw, Dr. Carlton Walker, Dr. Bob Bowles, Dr. Glenn Mattlage, Bill Moss, Richard Pickle, Jim Williams, and Bill O'Reilly. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in honor of Gary to drill a well to provide clean drinking water to an impoverished African village through the World Help Well Project.
