Obituary for Josephine “Josie” Fortune Born in Hofheim, Germany on May 13, 1923 Josephine “Josie” Fortune passed away peacefully at home in Roswell, NM with her loving husband of 45 years, Ray, by her side on April 1, 2012, after a courageous battle with a prolonged illness. Josie worked as a dental assistant for Dr. James Lankford. When she switched careers Josie brought a touch of elegance to the Sally Port Inn where she served as a hostess for more than a decade. Josie could always find beauty around her and always looked for – and found – the best in people. Josie is preceded in death by her mother AnnaMaria Weidner her father Wilhelm Weidner, her step-mother Johanna Weidner, her brother Karl Weidner and her niece Jana Mozal. She is survived by her loving husband of 45 years Raymond Fortune, her sister Tillie Walker, her nieces Waltraud Lorenz and Jessica Dillon, nephews Jurgen Weidner and Andrew Walker, and great-nieces and nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews. The family extends their heartfelt thanks to Dr. Stiller, Encompass Home Health Care, and Vista Care Hospice with special thanks to Nurse Jodie Rogers and all the CNAs who brought so much comfort and joy to Josie in her final days. Always a lady, Josie wished to leave this world as she came. In accordance with her wishes she will be cremated and no services will be held. She will be interred at a later date with her husband at Arlington National Cemetery. She is an object of beauty and strength, and I stand and watch until at last she hangs like a speck of white cloud just where the sea and sky come down to mingle with each other. Then someone at my side says, “There she goes!” Gone where? Gone from my sight…that is all. She is just as large in mast and hull and spar as she was when she left my side and just as able to bear her load of living freight to the place of destination. Her diminished size is in me, not in her. And just at the moment when someone at my side says, “There she goes!” there are other eyes watching her coming and other voices ready to take up the glad shout, “Here she comes!”
