Steven Chavez, 53, passed away on Sunday, May 24, 2026. Steven Albert Montoya Chavez was born on July 5, 1972, in Roswell, New Mexico, to Lucy Chavez and Albert Hernandez Sr. From the beginning, Steven carried with him a generous spirit, a quick wit, and a deep love for the people around him. Steven found joy in the simple things that brought people together — sharing meals with family and friends, telling stories, and cheering on his beloved Giants. His presence was warm, steady, and full of humor, the kind that could light up a room and put anyone at ease. Among the many memories held close by those who loved him, his wife, Angelica Orlidia Chavez, treasures the very first moment they met. Steven, with his signature charm, asked her, “Is your dad a thief?” Confused, Angelica replied, “No, he is a pastor.” Steven smiled and said, “Oh, because he stole the stars from the sky and put them in your eyes.” It was the beginning of a love marked by laughter, tenderness, and a bond that endured. He was known to his family as someone who could always make you laugh. He was rarely seen without a hat and always sported clothes in the color grey. While he couldn't fix everything, he was good at fixing most things. Steven loved to cook spaghetti, eat sweets and drink Dr. Pepper and was excellent at bowling and darts. He enjoyed spending time with his children and his dog, Gordo. Steven’s life was defined by the relationships he nurtured and the joy he brought to others. He will be remembered for his humor, his heart, and the way he made everyone feel like family. He leaves behind loved ones who will forever carry his memory forward, grateful for the time they shared and the love he gave so freely. Those left to cherish and treasure memories of Steven are his wife, Angelica Orlidia Chavez; children: Victor A Rodriguez, Dimitri G. Rodriguez, Kassandra G. Kivett and husband James Kivett, Steven A. Chavez, Annisa Chavez; grandchildren: James Kivett, Bradley Chavez, and Shariah Rodriguez; siblings: Eugene Montoya, Albert Hernandez, Sam Hernandez, Joseph Montoya, Nicole Montoya; aunts and uncles: Stella Kevera, Jimmy Horton, Nancy Pacheco, Larry Horton, Earnie Horton, Ray Horton; nieces and nephews: Elias Rodriguez, Jacob Montoya, Michael Montoya, Brittney and Bernadette Montoya; and beloved pet Harley. To any of Steven’s family that may have missed, please accept our apologies — you are deeply appreciated. Steven is preceded in death by his parents, Lucy Chavez, and Albert Hernandez Sr; grandparents: Lola Horton and Andres Horton; siblings: Michael J. Montoya and Monica Chavez; and family dog, Gordo. Steven’s family would like to say a special thank you to Judy Skinner, Joe Gamboa, Leo Montoya, and Mike Chips. Services will be held at Christ Church 2200 N. Sycamore on June 27th, 2026, at 2:00 PM.
