Bret A. Dear

Bret Alan Dear, 60, passed away on July 24, 2024, in Roswell, New Mexico. Born on October 24, 1963, in San Jose, California, Bret was a man of many talents and passions who touched the lives of many with his kindness and curiosity. He is survived by his daughter, Terran Maritt (Devin Maritt), his son, Joshua Dear (Kellie Dear). He is also survived by his best friend for life, Lynn Dear. His partner, Jennifer Peacock and stepson Rylie Habdley. Bret was a proud grandfather to Lyla Dear, Mason Maritt, Cohen Maritt, Trentyn Maritt, Abigail Dear, Gatlin Dear, Hudsun Maritt, Westenn Maritt, Maya Dear, and Nova Dear. He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Leland Burton Dear and Betty Jean Dear (Defoe). Bret's life was marked by a profound dedication to his diverse interests. He was an avid practitioner of Jiu-Jitsu and a respected member of the American Judo and Jiu-Jitsu Federation. His love for music saw him playing the guitar with passion, one he shared with his son Joshua. A lifelong learner, Bret's pursuits included meditation, reading, hiking, and immersing himself in nature. His fascination with genealogy, wizardry, and Native American culture enriched his life and those around him. He also found joy in yoga which he shared with his daughter, Terran. He was always studying and learning. Bret had a special love for all animals, particularly dogs, cats, ravens, hawks, and bears. He loved his pets so much he gave the last of his money for their care on several occasions. He cherished spending time with his Terran and Joshua. They enjoyed playing board games, listening to music, and rocking out. Their shared adventures included getting Slurpees on the way to his house, visiting Great America, hiking in Dog Valley, going to Lake Tahoe, and making each other laugh. Bret deeply loved his grandchildren and always enjoyed getting into mischief with them. He even would go in “time out” with them. This creating countless cherished memories. He loved hiking with Jennifer and Rylie. He and Lynn had a special love for Hawaii. His family and friends enjoyed just being with him and made him feel safe, he was our comfort, our home. He had a deep admiration for Bruce Lee and was known for his hilarious sense of humor, always bringing joy and laughter to those around him. He always could cheer you up and gave the best hugs Bret earned his Bachelor of Science in Business Management from the University of Phoenix. He furthered his education at the Monroe Institute. His commitment to knowledge and personal growth was an inspiration to all who knew him. Bret enjoyed visiting family in Willits, CA, where he created many cherished memories. He will be remembered for his gentle spirit, his love for learning, and the deep connections he formed with his family and friends. He will be dearly missed but forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
