Elma M. Mills Elma left her earthly home and entered into heaven’s gates on Saturday, September 14, 2024. Elma fought a long hard battle the last 20 years and is now without struggles. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Thursday, September 26, 2024, at 10 a.m. at Gateway Church. International Pastor Rick Rapp will officiate services. Elma will be laid to rest at a later date in Joplin, MO. Elma worked as a school bus driver in Hagerman, NM, until she left to become a preschool director and help open the preschool at Gateway Christian School in Roswell. Elma worked at Gateway until the day of her car wreck that left her unable to work but she remained faithful to Gateway and its members in every area she could help in. Elma had a number of loves in her life starting with her husband of 62 years Virgil Mills, who survives her at the family home. She would often say that they grew up together living down the street from each other and attending school together. She would say it was destiny to marry your best friend and that’s exactly what she did. Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Pam Marquez of Roswell; son, Dr. Donald Mills of San Antonio, TX; and daughter, Rebecca Mills of Roswell; many nieces and nephews, and a very special sister-in-law, Enid Clark of Carl Junction, MO. Elma loved being a parent but was overjoyed to become a Nana. Her grandchildren included: Estella (Star) Knight (husband Val) of Roswell, Adali and Jenesis Gardarilla also of Roswell. Elma also had many bonus grandchildren. She also fell over the moon when her two great grandbabies were born, Luna and Sonny Knight. We would like to thank the members at Gateway Church for always checking on mom and making her feel loved. A special thank you to a couple of caregivers she has had, Rose and Kat. Thank you for taking care of mom and Christina Gomez for going above and beyond the call of duty to find mom the best help possible. Elma’s tribute was lovingly written by her family.
