Frances Schultz Jennings

Frances Schultz Jennings was born on March 29th 1919 in Stevenson, Alabama to Paul Gibbons Schultz and Fern Mitchell Schultz. She passed away peacefully surrounded by her children at the family home Sunday, January 31, 2016, at the age of 96 years. The Schultz family along with life-long friend, Sallie Ann Austin, relocated from Stevenson to Roswell for a drier and healthier climate in 1926. Frances attended Roswell schools graduating from Roswell High School in 1937. She participated in many clubs and activities and senior year was ‘El Coyote Queen’ and Class Secretary. She attended Texas State College for Women (Texas Women’s University) and the University of New Mexico. While at UNM she was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority and was recently honored with a 75 year pin. Frances’ goal was to be “an efficient legal secretary” and began her carrier as secretary for G. T. Watts Esquire. While working, she met James T. Jennings, who practiced law with the Watts Firm, and they were married at Saint Peter’s Church on June 30, 1942. Family was always top priority and her grandchildren loved her famous ‘bear’ hugs and chocolate chip cookies. Frances was a life-time member of the Roswell Reading Club as were her mother, Fern Schultz, and daughter, Mary Maloney. Frances was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Rear Admiral Paul G. Schultz, USN, Commander Jesse ‘Zeph’ Schultz, USN, and husband, James T. Jennings. She is survived by her children: James T. Jennings, Jr. and wife Ann; Mary J. Maloney and husband Dick; John M. Jennings and wife Mikele; Thomas E. Jennings; Timothy Z. Jennings; and Carol J. Rolfs and husband Michael; 20 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. A special thanks to long time assistants Estella Marquez and Peggy Voigt, and health care givers Rose, Margaret and Dora. Services are being handled by Anderson Bethany Funeral Home (2609 South Main Street) with visitation scheduled on Wednesday, February 3, 2016, from 12:00pm until 7:00pm with family present from 5:00pm to 7:00pm. Funeral services are scheduled Thursday, February 4th, 2016 at 10:00am at Saint Peter’s Catholic Church, 801 South Main Street followed by grave side internment at South Park Cemetery. Pallbearers will be her grandsons. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to local charities Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southeastern New Mexico (1717 West Second Street, Roswell) or the Historical Society of Southeastern New Mexico Foundation, (208 North Lea Avenue, Roswell).
