Joseph Chianta

Joseph Thomas Chianta born in Buffalo, New York, December 10, 1929, died March 15, 2008, at home in Roswell, New Mexico surrounded by his loving family. The son of Sam and Mary D’Angelo Chianta, Joseph spent several years of his childhood as a “Father Baker’s Boy”, residing at the orphanage as his family did its best to cope with the challenges of the Great depression. He graduated from Burgard Vocational High School and served in the U.S. Army from 1953-1955, based primarily in Iceland. Upon discharge, he continued a 30 year career with Republic Steel as a maintenance mechanic and electrician, from which he retired when the plant closed in 1982. He married Sue Bartoo of Hamburg, New York, in 1967, the same year he graduated from Buffalo State College. From that point, he added teaching to his resume, substituting at Burgard and Seneca Vocational Schools as well as others in Western, New York. The family moved to Otego, New York in 1984, where Joe worked as an electrician until 1994 when he followed Sue in her new career as a traveling nurse. While moving to new towns every few months, Joe continued working as a substitute teacher. He finally retired permanently when the couple settled in Roswell in 1999. Joe is predeceased by his parents; brothers, Christopher and Sam Chianta, Jr; and sister, Elizabeth Moore. He is survived by his loving wife; daughter Melisa Chianta of Santa Fe; son Aaron Chianta of Oneonta, New York; grand-daughters, Summer Star of Michigan and Jasmine Chianta of Oneonta; brothers Angelo Chianta of Buffalo and Vincent Chianta of Crescent City, Florida, sisters; Sara Re of Las Vegas, Nevada, Carmella Smith of Buffalo, and Mary Canzoneri of Phoenix, Arizona as well was many nieces and nephews. Joseph is to be cremated and interred as the Santa Fe National Cemetery in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Thank you. The family of Joseph T. Thanks also to the “visiting angels”, the nurses and staff of Vista Care Hospice, especially Cindy and Ramona, and to Joe’s tireless and loving caregiver, Florinda of Agape Home Care.
