Richard P. Barreras

Our beloved husband and Dad, Richard P. Barreras, passed into the waiting arms of Jesus, surrounded by his loved ones on Tuesday, October 8, 2024. A Rosary will be held on Monday, October 28, 2024, at Anderson Bethany Funeral Home and Crematory at 11 a.m., and a Graveside Service will be held immediately following the rosary at South Park Cemetery, officiated by Deacon Ernesto Martinez. Richard was born on July 8, 1946, in Artesia, New Mexico to Adan and Felicita Prudencio Barreras. He was 78 at the time of his passing. Richard quit school before he started middle school to work with his Dad to help support his family. When he was a teenager, Richard traveled to California with one of his friends and worked picking fruit and vegetables in the San Fernando Valley. When he returned to Roswell, Richard joined Job Corp and traveled to Michigan and New Jersey. Through Job Corp he received several certifications, including HVAC and meat cutting. Richard proudly served his country in the Army, during the Vietnam War, where he was wounded and received an honorable discharge. Richard worked at Three Rivers Dam, and several other jobs, until he went to work for the State of New Mexico in the Department of Corrections. He retired as a Sergeant after 25 years. Richard spent his retirement years traveling around New Mexico to various casinos. He would say that he wanted to head West, which meant going to the Casino. Every new project he started was made with the decision, beforehand, that it could be done little by little. If there were things that needed to be done, and he didn't really want to do them, he would always say, “ah, we can do it tomorrow”. He had a lot of patience and was never in a rush. He would say that he wasn't in a hurry because he was retired. One thing he always said was, “I don't like people”. When COVID-19 hit and people were told to shelter in place, Jonathan said that his Dad had been training for that for years. Jonathan told his Dad that he could probably make a fortune on Tik Tok, showing others how to shelter in place. His laugh, his crazy sense of humor and his advice will forever be missed. Many people may not have seen it, but he was a big teddy bear and had a huge heart. When he could, he would help those in need. He was a wonderful father and was always there for his two sons whenever they needed him. Richard loved deeply and passionately. Richard was a catholic and had a deep belief that Jesus Christ was his Lord and Savior. He thanked Him every night before he fell asleep, for his life and for his family. Richard is survived by his wife, Dalene of Roswell; his son, Jonathan Barreras, of Albuquerque; step sons: TJ Frederich (Christina) of Albuquerque, and Christopher Lucero (Briana) of Roswell; step daughter, Deserea Morales (Eric) of Roswell; grandchildren: Grayson, Hayden and Ian Frederich, Ignacio and Ilias Villalobos, Elena and Cruz Morales; his mother-in-law, Wanda Cook; his brother, Danny Barreras; sister, Angelita Soliz (Steve); as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Richard was preceded in death by his parents: Adan and Felicita Barreras; his brother, Frank Barreras; his sister, Mary Helen Melendez; and his son, Richard A. Barreras.
